Client Objectives
Boston Consulting Group’s Chicago office is one of the largest in the consulting firm’s global practice. Occupying Floors 44-48 at 300 North LaSalle, BCG tasked our firm to conceptualize a brand-new design to attract and retain the workforce of the future. In stark contrast to their traditional floor plans of enclosed offices, our design leveraged an open and transparent plan to spark social interactions, while meeting the demanding privacy requirements of their industry.
Design Concept & Programming
We worked with BCG to transform the experience of working in their office. Our process began with a principled approach to circulation and program, facilitating cross-communication and using a diversity of amenities to draw BCGers together in a healthier, more collaborative and equitable work environment. Interior work areas are balanced by two large perimeter lounges that allow all employees to share breathtaking views of the city below. The Lake Lounge is placed to take full advantage of panoramic views north to Lake Michigan, while River Lounge offers views to the Chicago River 560 feet below.
We drew the urban and natural landscape indoors through linear planters along the floor-to-ceiling windows and trees set amongst the open workstations. The inherently sustainable design ensures ample access to daylight, panoramic views of the city and improved access to amenities for all employees. The newly transparent partner offices feature full-height double glazed glass walls, maintaining full visibility without sacrificing acoustic privacy. The result is an increased sense of connection throughout the office between people, nature and the unique urban environment.
Design Highlights
- Igniting Conversation – River Lounge was designed to spark conversation and ignite ideas with inviting areas equipped for social gatherings or happy hours.
- Providing A Quiet Escape – Lake Lounge is a quiet, contemplative area resembling a classic university library, designed to provide a moment of reflection and peace without distraction while enjoying the skyline and lake scene.
- The Zipper Stairs – The staircase connecting floors 44-48 is nicknamed “the zipper” for its zigzag design that offers expansive views of downtown Chicago.
Challenges
The primary challenge on this project was to effectively rewrite the script for how BCG staff members work by delivering a vastly different experience from their former space. With BCG making this new demonstration floor a priority, we were tasked to achieve astounding quality and a custom-tailored design within an ambitious timeline.
